This work began as a drawing with ash from crushed incense and sage leaves, aiming to represent our carbon beginnings. The impetus behind this work is equanimity.
'Beneath the Boughs' encompasses what lies beneath difficult experiences and what can occur 'above' those moments. Hope is symbolized in the brighter areas in peaches, cream, and lighter blues. I strive to find equanimity, not as a coping mechanism for great anxiety or as a balm, but as a way of explaining and better understanding what is occurring in the world around me.
This piece serves as an experimental ocean, where I place the waves and wonder in close proximity, in order to see this scape of life for what it really is: volatile and archaic. That is the resolution. Life is ever unknown but as a little flicker of Dickinson’s 'hope,' I have portrayed my darling, now gone, Bunny, as a sort of moon-like beacon in the upper right of the piece.
from morning ’til night
the whole world had a strange haze over it
I did not intend for it to be that way
perhaps it is true
your spirit was wandering
I don’t mind
you can not lie or pretend when you are in a field
when the clouds have a touch of anticipation in them
you know to be present in that place
whatever it is that I discover
I can only hope
is a progression towards something more defined
like the outline of your small form
your squinted eyes
and sprinkled ears
you should know
I can still feel your soft tiny shoulders
beneath the palms
of my hands
