Satellite and field studies show that Alaska's glaciers are shrinking faster than those in any other region on Earth, accounting for nearly a quarter of total global glacier ice loss.

While climate heating is causing widespread regional glacier retreat across Alaska, the glacier melting on Mount Spurr also includes volcanic and geothermal activity.

The vent last erupted in ’92 and ’53, sending ash 65,000 feet into the air. Another eruption could produce hot gas, rock, and ash traveling over 200 mph, melting the snow and ice and triggering mudflows called lahars.

Between apogee and apathy
We glide
In glacial till
In circles of salt and silt
In the Mojave
Into a sort of trace being
Everything melts

It yearns for sky
